ACS pre-submission checklist

Placing ACS citations in the text

With superscripts, place the number after the relevant word or at the end of the sentence, outside the full stop and comma in many ACS journals, but follow your instructor or journal guidance. With italic numbers, place them in parentheses before the punctuation. Multiple sources can be cited together with commas (1,3) or a range (2-5).

Finding journal abbreviations

ACS uses the abbreviations from the Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (CASSI). Search CASSI for the journal title to find the official abbreviation, and copy it exactly, including full stops. Do not invent abbreviations.

ACS in lab reports

In chemistry lab reports, cite the lab manual, any literature values you compare to (melting points, spectra) and any methods you adapted. Literature values without a citation are a common reason for lost marks.

Quick answers to common questions

Is ACS used outside chemistry?

Mainly chemistry and related fields; other sciences often use APA, AMA, IEEE or journal-specific styles.

Do I need DOIs in ACS?

Include a DOI whenever the source has one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current ACS style guide?

The ACS Guide to Scholarly Communication, which replaced the third edition of the ACS Style Guide.

Does ACS use numbers or author-date?

Either. ACS allows superscript numbers, italic numbers in parentheses, or author-date, as long as you are consistent.

How are authors separated in ACS?

With semicolons: Lee, J.; Patel, R.; Chen, Y.
