How to use a college essay rubric well
Most students over-grade their own work because they know what they meant to say. Two tricks help: leave the draft for a day before grading, and read it aloud. Anything you stumble over, or any sentence where you think "they'll know what I mean", is a revision target.
What each criterion means, and how to fix it
1. Answers the prompt
Copy the prompt above your draft. After every paragraph, ask whether it serves that question. The Common App prompts are broad, but supplemental prompts ("Why this college?") are specific and readers notice generic answers.
2. A specific story
Essays that summarise a whole résumé read like a list. Pick one moment: a conversation, a failure, a project at 2am. Detail makes it believable and memorable.
3. Your voice
If a friend read it without your name, would they guess it was you? Replace words you would never say aloud. Short, plain sentences usually sound more confident than long ones.
4. Reflection
The story is the evidence; reflection is the point. Add a sentence or two that answers "So what?": what did this change in how you think or act?
5. Show, don't tell
Swap adjectives about yourself for actions. "I am curious" becomes the scene of you taking apart the family radio.
6. Strong opening
Start in the middle of the moment, with a line of dialogue or a concrete image. Cut throat-clearing openings such as dictionary definitions or famous quotes.
7. Clear structure
A simple arc works: situation, challenge, action, reflection. Use our free essay outline builder to map paragraphs before revising.
8. Purposeful ending
Avoid repeating the opening word for word. Show who you are now, or connect the lesson to what you want to do next.
9. Word limit
The Common App personal essay has a 650-word maximum. Supplemental essays vary by college, so check each one.
10. Clean writing
Run a grammar check, then proofread manually; tools miss wrong-but-real words. See our grammar checker comparison.
AI essay graders vs human feedback
Automated graders can flag grammar, length and readability, but they cannot judge whether your story is true to you or whether a reader will remember it. Use tools for the mechanical criteria (9 and 10) and people for the rest. Be careful about pasting your essay into any service whose privacy terms you have not read.

Worked example: grading one paragraph
Draft: "I have always been passionate about helping people. Volunteering at the hospital taught me many valuable lessons about teamwork and responsibility, and I know these skills will help me in college."
| Criterion | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Specific story | Not met | No moment, place or person appears. |
| Show, not tell | Not met | "Passionate", "valuable lessons" are claims without evidence. |
| Your voice | Weak | Phrases could appear in thousands of essays. |
| Reflection | Weak | Lessons are named, not explored. |
Revision direction: pick one shift at the hospital. What happened? What did you do? What surprised you? What do you do differently now? Answer those in your own words and the paragraph will meet four criteria at once.

Score bands explained
| Score | What it usually means | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| 0-5 | The core story or reflection is missing | Rethink the topic: brainstorm three specific moments and pick the one with the clearest change in you. |
| 6-8 | A real story with some gaps | Revise the unticked criteria, starting with reflection and specificity. |
| 9-10 | Strong draft | Get one trusted reader, then line-edit and proofread. |
A revision plan for the next 7 days
- Day 1: grade the draft with the rubric and note the three weakest criteria.
- Day 2: rewrite the opening to start inside a moment.
- Day 3: replace every self-description adjective with an action or detail.
- Day 4: expand the reflection; answer "how did this change what I do?"
- Day 5: cut to the word limit, protecting reflection over description.
- Day 6: ask a teacher or counsellor what they remember after one read.
- Day 7: proofread aloud and regrade.
Questions to ask your human reader
- What is the one thing you remember about me after reading this?
- Where did you lose interest?
- Does any sentence sound unlike me?
- What questions do you still have about the story?
Ask for reactions, not rewrites. The essay must stay in your words.
When to stop revising
Stop when the essay scores 9 or 10, a trusted reader can tell you what it is about in one sentence, and further changes only swap words rather than improve meaning. Over-revised essays can lose the voice that made them work.
